Estate administration refers to the process of collecting and managing an estate, paying any debts and taxes, and distributing the remaining property to the heirs of the estate. Usually, the Will names the Executor. This person is responsible for following the wishes of the deceased as indicated in the Will. Care should be taken to locate the Last Will and Testament of the deceased, and the Executor of the estate should meet with the attorney to review the Will and to initiate any probate procedures if necessary.
If needed, a Tax Identification Number will be created for the estate along with an estate bank account. This account is used to pay obligations of the Deceased. The Executor should list all assets including any jointly held assets. Care should be taken to locate insurance policies, retirement plans and any bank accounts, including bank accounts held in joint names. Financial advisors should be contacted. The Funeral Home will notify social security. If a car is titled in only the Deceased’s name, Landon can help you get the title changed.
